New Zealand secured a consolation victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, defeating Papua New Guinea by 7 wickets at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. While the result did little to change the fortunes of either team, who were already eliminated from the Super 8 stage, it provided a platform for Lockie Ferguson to showcase his express pace.
PNG, put in to bat first after New Zealand won the toss, could only muster a meagre 78 runs on the board. Their batting woes continued from previous matches, with none of the batsmen managing to build a significant score. The New Zealand bowling attack, with Trent Boult in his final T20 World Cup appearance, shared the spoils, but it was Lockie Ferguson who stole the show.
Ferguson, known for his raw pace, unleashed a fiery spell, bowling a staggering four maiden overs in his four-over quota. He picked up three crucial wickets, dismantling the PNG batting order with his accuracy and hostility.
Chasing a paltry 79 for victory, New Zealand openers started cautiously. However, they never looked in serious trouble. They paced their chase effectively, reaching the target comfortably with 46 balls to spare. While the win won’t erase the disappointment of their early exit from the tournament, it provided a much-needed confidence boost for the Black Caps.
This match, though inconsequential in terms of qualification, highlighted the talent of Lockie Ferguson. His exceptional bowling performance, with four maidens and three wickets, will be a talking point despite the low-scoring encounter. While both teams head home from the World Cup earlier than they would have liked, New Zealand can take some solace from a dominant display against PNG.
